A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about effort-based lifting. The idea is not to worry specifically about sets, reps, or weight, but to work the muscle with full effort (to near-failure) and then progress over time. I have been trying this out in practice and using it for one trial exercise (barbell curl).
Today marked the 5th consecutive workout with progress in weight. I don't worry about the reps or time, I just go to near-failure for one set. Afterwards, I eat something within a half-hour to signal "hunting success" to my body.
This type of system makes my life easier. I don't have to analyze anything or perform a complex workout. I just work the muscle to full effort, eat, and that seems to be enough. I look forward to continuing with this simple and effective program.
