Vitamin D and The Holy Grail

In a recent Vitamin D newsletter, there was this interesting quote:

"While I am on the subject, remember, that vitamin D will not prevent all cancer or heart disease, or respiratory infections. True, evidence is accumulating that it will help, but you can still develop cancer, heart disease, and respiratory infections with adequate blood levels of vitamin D. That's why I believe in complementary, not alternative, medicine."

Good.  I'm glad this was said.  Too many people think Vitamin D will cure all their problems.  It is an important factor in health, but not the primary one in my opinion.

In this recent study, the focus was on how Vitamin D interacts with gut flora in modulating inflammation.  The conclusion was that both probiotics and Vitamin D were needed – not just Vitamin D.

AMEN! I have to say, your one of the refreshing blogs I read from time to time. Even though I don’t always agree with you, I’d say your usually on the right track — Stephan from whole health source is the only other one I can say that about!

Have you seen the back and forth between Richard Nickoley/Matt Stone/Jimmy Moore?

The health/paleo blogosphere is becoming like high school!

I have to say this though — when the Aktins diet gets morphed into a diet of eggs/cheese/butter. I have to cringe a little. I wonder what Art Devany would say.

We know that we increase insulin sensitivity with monos vs saturated fats — and someone with extreme insulin problems should not be eating foods that stimulate large amounts of insulin (the foods mentioned above).

What happened to eating whole foods like meat/fish/vegetables/fruit/small amounts of low n-6 nuts (or oils like EVOO)?

Maybe supplementing with a little cod liver oil/butter oil/bifidus infantis. What a concept, we really don’t need a multivitmin or mega doses of vitamin D, hmmmmm (can it be true??)

And how about exercise? Seems to me that some people think that you don’t need any if you are eating right — BULLSHIT! Most of us probably need to walk up to 1hr a day and train hard twice a week for maximum benefits.

    EAT REAL FOODS PEOPLE.

    Matt,

Fantastic blog. You may be on to something that others have overlooked.

Which prebiotics and probiotics do you personally take?

I have been told that most probiotics do not survive the stomach acid.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, people are taking things to the extreme when they don’t need to be.

I dig Stephan’s blog as well.

I’ve been experimenting with different products.

    Prebiotic: http://www.jarrow.com/product/457/Inulin_FOS

Probiotic: One good product is GoodBelly (www.goodbelly.com).

I’ve looked into it previously. It’s strange, they cite two studies – one that shows it had a positive effect, and one that shows it had no effect:

Given the questions and the price, I haven’t tried it yet.
